2016 Scholarship Awardee – Patty Duffy
“My mother immigrated from the Philippines ~30 years ago to Chicago where she met my father. Both of my parents are nurses, which is probably where I get my love of nursing from. I received my BSN from Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN and have worked as a ICU RN for the past 5 and ½ years. Last year I decided I wanted to further my career and attend the University of San Diego to pursue my Masters of Science in Nursing and become a Nurse Practitioner. My goal is to work with the underserved and under represented communities and focus on women’s health. I believe that education is the key to empowering people. Like the saying goes, “give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man to fish, and feed him for a life time.”
My goal is to provide compassionate care and really try to educate my patients on their health and why preventative healthcare is so important. I thoroughly enjoy teaching and coaching. In my spare time, before starting school full time, I volunteered at the high school I attended and was an assistant coach for both the varsity women’s soccer team and the JV women’s basketball team. At work, I would always volunteer to take on student nurses and precept new hires. My hope is that when I graduate, I will use my love of teaching and nursing to provide compassionate and empowering healthcare to underserved communities.”
