The second annual “Vim & Vigor: Art and Wellness Festival” will again be held October 14, Saturday, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Memorial Park in Chula Vista located at 374 Parkway, Chula Vista. This is a one-day event that combines Art and Wellness and showcases the art & culture of Filipino Americans, Asian Americans and others as well as the health resources available in the community.

The purpose of the event is to increase the appreciation for art of people of diverse backgrounds and give them the opportunity to participate in an event that are usually out of reach for them. This will enhance pride of their cultural heritage and increase their self-esteem. Another purpose is to expose them to health professionals that they can meet and resources in the community that they can access to improve their health and wellness.

There will be different commercial and informational vendors, cultural shows, food and cultural foods, physical activities, a lot of fun, and workshops on the eight aspects of “Total Wellness” (See table attached for topic and speakers). There will be an Art Pavilion for kids featuring interactive art stations for them and Chula Vista artists on display. Food demonstrations will be conducted by Joanne and Rex Rullan from Cooking 4 Life and Heidi Sarmiento, MS, MPH, a well-known nutritionist and faculty in nutrition and physical activity at several community colleges.

Informational booths include the Skinny Gene Project, Asian American Health Foundation, SD County Aging and Independence Services, Union of Pan Asian Communities, and others. The sponsors for this event are the San Diego County Enhancement Program, Comerica Bank, and Operation Samahan. The last two will also have informational booths.

The performers for this event are: KMF CrossFit, U-Jam Fitness San Diego, Samahan Filipino American Performing Arts & Education Center, Capoeira Brasil, La Fiesta Danzantes de San Diego, SD Falun Dafa Association, Ballet Folklorico, El Tapatio & De San Dieguito, CypherSt8, Art One SD, Johnny Cometa (US Navy Chaplain) and Latin Percussion Arts.

This event is sponsored by Kalusugan Center for Health and Wellness (formerly Kalusugan Community Services) located at 550 East 8th Street, Suite 6, National City, California. Kalusugan is a non-profit community based organization whose mission is to help Filipino Americans and other people in need to find the path to good health and total wellness so they will be healthy, live longer and lead productive lives through Community Education and Service, Advocacy, Research and Training.
